Exclusive: My Mother Didn’t Influence My Recording Deal With Davido – Mayorkun

Mayorkun, whose real name is Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel has disclosed to the shock of many how his mother’s influence leveraged his recording deal with Davido. The artiste signed to Davido’s new record label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) in this interview with Famuyiwa Damilare and Gabriel Alabi of AyolaTV, he clears the air on his supposed competition with Davido.

What could best describe your brand as a musical artiste?

Mayorkun is a very versatile artiste. That’s probably the most unique thing about me. I can blend and sing to any genre of music. I also sing using punchlines, rappers tend to get jealous.

What is your unique selling point among your pair at DMW?

Everyone at DMW is unique in one way or the other, I am an artiste who sings using punchlines. You can say I’m a singing rapper. lol, everyone else has their own selling point, Yonda is fluent with the street hop vocabs, Dremo is an amazing rapper; he raps and you can hear every single word, different strokes for different folks.

When people say you sing better than your boss (Davido), what comes to your mind?

I don’t think I have ever heard anyone say that, Have you? Doesn’t make sense to compare Davido with his protege, I’m learning from him.

Do you think you sing better than Davido?

Already answered that, i don’t think so. It’s actually almost unreasonable.

Do you see yourself doing better than he is doing anytime from now?

It will be Davido’s wish to see me doing excellently in a few years, I feel like I’m on the right path. So everything is cool.

Has Davido ever been your role-model?

Yes, Davido has been my role model right from Dami Duro, I even did a cover for that song and paid a blog to put it up back then.. That shows how much Davido has inspired and influenced me even before I met him.

How were you able to secure your recording deal with Davido?

I have answered this in a lot of interviews, many people know the story. I was discovered on twitter, I posted a video of myself playing the keyboard and singing along to Davido’s song “The Money” which featured Olamide, Davido saw the video, commended me, Followed me and then asked me to send a few songs to him, He listened to the songs and the rest is history. Lol

Did your mother influence the deal in any way?

At all, she didn’t, She’s been my praying partner, she’s been supporting me in every way she can. Steadily making sure I’m still level headed and on the right path.

How best can you describe your mother’s support so far?

She’s always been supportive but then she wanted me to go to school as well, cos she knows in Nigeria it’s almost impossible to do music forever, she made sure I finished my Bsc in the university. The plan was for me to work first, raise some money to push my music. I was already working Until I met Davido.

What have been your challenges so far?

The challenges have been mild, Picking songs to release have been a tough one as I have recorded over 100 songs and everyone on the team has a different opinion and listening ear. But we have been coping.

Can you tell us your rise to stardom?

It happened so fast, i released ELEKO a year ago. Performed at sold out campus shows a few weeks after, Also performed in Kenya, Dubai, London and a few other countries. I won the rookie of the year at the headies in December to crown it all. This year I have released SADE and the reception has been really surprising, everyone is loving it, in one week everyone can sing along to it. I thank God!

When are you looking  to dropping your album?

My album might be out next year, hopefully. I have started the recording process. My new single SADE is out right now with the video. It did half a million views in 1 week. That’s amazing. I’m dropping 3 other singles this year. Watch out.
