PSG 7 Monaco 1: Emery’s Men Regain Ligue 1 Crown
PSG regained the Ligue 1 title with a thumping 7-1 victory against last season’s champions AS Monaco.
Two goals apiece from Angel Di Maria and Giovani Lo Celso, a customary strike from Edinson Cavani, a Radamel Falcao own-goal and Julian Draxler’s 86th-minute goal sealed the silverware in style. The only surprise after the crushing victory was that Monaco are PSG’s nearest challengers in the league – however now a massive 17 points behind.
It was also the first time this season Monaco have conceded more than five goals.
The game was all over after just half-an-hour.
On 14 minutes a fantastic team move carved open the Monaco defence and Lo Celso, who started it, finished it with just his second Ligue 1 goal of the season.Only three minutes later it was 2-0 and it was Cavani grabbing another goal of a sublime season.
The Uruguay international showed incredible movement to break free and his bullet header was too much for Monaco No1 Subasic.
Incredibly, another three minutes Monaco were again picking the ball out of their net.
Di Maria sprang the offside trap with Monaco full-back Jorge unable to catch him.
And Lo Celso duly obliged just 27 minutes in with his second of the game, planting a header into the bottom corner.
There was time for Ligue 1’s second-placed team to grab what evidently would turn out to be a consolation as Lopes finished well from a swift counter seven minutes before the break.
The second period started better for the visitors, but it couldn’t really have got worse. But PSG were clearly desperate to show how far ahead of their rivals they were – and they went about it brutally.
Di Maria slotted home his second of the night on 58 minutes, and then Monaco’s talisman Radamel Falcao scored on 76 minutes, just at the wrong end.
The victory was wrapped up with a cherry on top four minutes from time when substitute Julien Draxler saw his deflected shot fly past Subasic in the Monaco goal.
