THE LADY AND THE NURSES

Published

on

The lady was heavily pregnant. She had just closed for the day. She barely could walk. Her eyes were swollen and tear-filled. She managed to keep her face down to avoid people’s notice of her discomfort. She got to the main entrance of her workplace tired. She rested her back on the fence. An elderly man was sitting on the other side of the road. He was watching the lady as she changed her posture. He knew she was uncomfortable. Looking at her closely, he realized she was someone he knew. He stood up, crossed the road and walked up to her.
“Are you okay?” He asked.
She nodded a yes.
“I know you are not”
She managed to smile.
“Let me help you home.”
He assisted her to her car which was parked a little distance ahead. She was due for delivery. He drove her to the health post where she usually had her ante-natal care. By the time they got there, the pain had subsided. Her eyes were dry. The man helped her into the waiting area of the health post. She told the man to help her inform her maid at home. As soon as she sat on one of the benches, the man hurriedly left to get her delivery things which she said she had packed in a bag in her house. The health post was not so busy. There were some patients and relatives around. Two student nurses came to lead her to the nurses’ area where she was to be assisted to the labour room. They had offered her a wheelchair but she said she preferred to walk. A senior nurse (SN) was at the nurses’ post. She was busy applying some powder on her face. As soon as she saw them approach. She adjusted.
“Yes, what is wrong with her?”
“She is due for delivery ma.” One of the student nurses responded.
“She does not look like it?” The SN said.
The lady looked at her with surprise. The student nurses exchanged surprising glances.
“How can you say that?” The lady asked squinting her eyes.
“How can I not say that? You should have undressed by now.”
“Is it a must I go entirely naked before you know that I’m due?” The lady said between gnashing teeth.
“You two, make her sit somewhere. She will be the one to beg when the time comes.”
“I wonder who certified you a nurse? Let this be done with…” The lady replied angrily.
“You are still comfortable that’s why you are talking like you are more than you are.” The SN ranted.
“Madam, you are mean!” One of the relatives who was passing by shouted at the SN.
At that moment, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) walked in. The student nurses quickly went to their duty posts while the SN buried her head in a patient’s file in pretense.
“What is the argument about?” The CNO asked.
None of the nurses responded. The CNO noticed the lady in a corner. She walked up to her.
“Are you okay?” She asked.
“I am losing it madam. I am due for delivery but your nurse refused to attend to me.”
“Who amongst them?”
“That nurse there!” She shouted pointing at the SN.
“SN!” The CNO called out.
All the nurses rushed to where the lady was. The student nurses helped her to the delivery room. By then, the elderly man had arrived with her delivery things. Her maid was there too.
“I promise to teach you a lesson of your life should anything happen to me and my baby”
Her delivery was quick. She gave birth to a bouncing baby girl. When she had been cleaned up, she was taken to the maternity section. The CNO was by her side.
“I am sorry for my SN’s conduct.”
“She was very rude and unprofessional.” The lady said.
“I will definitely see to that madam.”
“Do you know she actually asked me to pay for a Mucus Extractor that I had already bought and put in my bag?”
“Really?”
“Yes ma. When I asked her, she said it was statutory. Meanwhile, it was the one I bought that was used.”
“SN!” The CNO called out.
She came in a rush. She could not deny the allegation.
Some days later, after the lady was discharged, the SN visited her.
“How can I help you?” The lady asked in surprise.
The SN knelt down in tears.

“You?'”
“I need you to help me plead with my superior. She has taken up my rude and unprofessional action towards you. I am on the verge of retrenchment as I speak.” She pleaded.
“How is that my concern?”
“Please help me beg her.”
“How on earth could you be so mean? You knew I was in pain. As if that was not enough, you wanted to extort me. That act is tantamount to necessary disciplinary action.”
“Please…!”
“You didn’t know me. Anyway, I’ll press the necessary buttons and get you out of the problem you have found yourself.”
“Thank you ma!” The SN said with a smile.
“The Head of the State Establishment Bureau is my older brother. I’m sure lines will fall in place.”
“I am very grateful ma.”
She helped her up and made her comfortable.
